Athletics Superintendent

One of the fastest growing Counties in Florida is seeking a highly motivated and personable leader to supervise a diverse technical athletic team. This position oversees the management of multiple premium sports fields and surfaces by implementing best practices in mowing, fertilization, pest management, aeration, moisture management, top dressing and more. This position will be involved in all aspects and decision making of field maintenance, staff development and organization cultural practices.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
The Athletics Superintendent assumes responsibility for managing and maintaining sports fields and facilities, which includes:

  • Athletic fields (all types of grasses).
  • Field management equipment.
  • Irrigation systems.
  • Sports field lighting and sound systems.
  • Facility grounds, landscaping and general upkeep of appearance standards.
  • Parking lots and special game day parking areas.
  • Assists with major policy decisions within department.
  • Creates and implements strategic and capital improvement program.
  • Represents management on construction, renovation and/or reconstruction of sports facilities, whether performed in-house or by outside contractors.
  • Prepares annual budget for the maintenance and capital improvement of sports facilities in accordance with master plans and defined standards.
  • Patrols and inspects County controlled property for potential violations of County codes, ordinances, rules, laws, etc. which have been reported, encountered or witnessed during the course of duties. Reports problems beyond the scope of the position to law enforcement agencies.
  • Interviews, hires, trains, directs, supervises, disciplines and recommends commendations for a staff of employees for the purpose of maintaining sports facilities and other properties.
  • Promotes Marion County’s culture and leads by the HICARD.
  • Appears in court or other judicial proceedings to submit documents, evidence, affidavits, and case summaries for the enforcement and prosecution of civil/criminal infractions.
  • Plans maintenance and project work to achieve appearance standards and ensure ongoing compliance with ADA requirements, and oversees the training, scheduling and deploying of personnel to accomplish the work in compliance with Local, State, and Federal Laws.
  • Follows Best Management Plans (BMP’s) to reduce impacts on the environment including recycling, storm water management, waste management and erosion control and improve the overall sustainability of the facilities. From writing specifications to scopes and BMP’s oversite.
  • Specifies, purchases (or leases) equipment and necessary supplies/materials to maintain the sports facilities and properties.
  • Manages inventory and oversees the preventive equipment maintenance and replacement programs.
  • Approves all expenditures and exercises cost control measures to keep operating and capital expenses in line with the approved budgets.
  • Assist with developing and implementing disaster planning, and security measures for events and teams.
  • Communicate with users of the field (leagues, coaches, players, parents, spectators) throughout the year.
  • Communicates regularly with other facility maintenance members on specific needs of the parks and recreation management team, as well as plans for the park system.
  • Communicates regularly with league boards to discuss activities, goals, plans and user input.
  • Participation in continuing education opportunities such as seminars, workshops, web-based training courses, field days and trade shows.
  • Responsible for user safety and the implementation of emergency procedures.
  • Keeps accurate and complete records on schedules, inventory, weather data, maintenance procedures, chemical applications, etc.
  • Prepares and submits reports of visitor events, contracts, accidents, activities and daily workload distribution and schedules.
  • Required to report to work at the appointed hour, as scheduled, and to work the entire assigned shift.
  • Provides excellent customer service to members of the general public and other County employees. Personal contact occurs with other employees of the unit, employees of other departments in the County, citizens, and customers of the department. Service is provided in person or by phone contact.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in sports facility management or equivalent education and/or experience preferred.
  • Three years’ experience operating or managing sports complexes or equivalent experience.
  • Three years supervisory experience, preferred in the parks and recreation field required.

Licenses or Certifications:

  • Possession of a valid, State of Florida driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle. Requirement exists at the time of hire and as a condition of continued employment.
  • Current First Aid and Safety Certification and BLS CPR certification within ninety days of hire.
  • Florida Ornamental & Turf Pesticide License within one year of hire preferred.
