Amy Fouty treats the football field at Michigan
State’s Spartan Stadium like an extension of her family.
The 45-year-old mother of two, with six
grandchildren, is MSU’s sports turf manager. She’s tackling a massive project
worth about $1 million this spring.
Fouty supervises a crew that’s resodding the
stadium’s field with four blends of Kentucky bluegrass.
It’s being trucked in from a New Jersey-based
company that specializes in quick turnarounds and has met the turf needs of NFL
teams like the Super Bowl champion New England Patriots.
“This is a living thing,” Fouty said of
the turfgrass. “It’s like having another child.
“It gets more attention than my own family
does.”
Fouty has worked this spring with Fields Inc., a
Canton, GA-based company since the Spartans’ spring football game concluded
April 13.
Crews ripped out the Kentucky bluegrass that
filled the field for about eight years, found ways to recycle it elsewhere
around campus and prepped the area with fresh MSU-engineered soil for a new
batch.
