ENGINEER I – SPORTS FIELD RESEARCH AND TESTING

Position Details

Biocore has an immediate opening for a full-time ENGINEER. The right individual will support an ongoing expansion of the surface injury prevention program with testing and analytics expertise dedicated to understanding the mechanical response of natural, hybrid, and synthetic turf play surfaces. The position is based out of primary office in Charlottesville, VA.

• In person in Charlottesville, VA
• Willingness to travel up to 30%.

Position Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in one of the interrelated disciplines of turfgrass science and/or management, sports biomechanics and/or kinesiology, mechanical engineering, or computer science fields. Demonstrated specific experience with sports turf research is required. Minimum of 4 years working in sports turf management, standardized turf testing, or turfgrass research program. Experience working in turfgrass management for high profile clubs and leagues is preferred.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Experience with field management requirements of elite/professional sports programs, including season scheduling, field usage, and event load.
  • Support data collection gathering in the laboratory and on-field using a variety of test devices and methods.
  • Support deployment and implementation of new test devices and methods with clubs and leagues, including training, troubleshooting, and maintaining service documentation.
  • Support development of technical documentation related to field testing procedures, guidelines, and best practices.

General Capabilities

  • Ability to establish and maintain field surface plots for research studies.
  • Familiarity/experience with field testing devices and procedures.
  • Familiarity with safety protocols and track record of following them rigorously.
  • Excellent written & oral communication skills; able to write testing documentation.
  • Able to lift 50-lbs unassisted.

Technical Capabilities

  • Knowledge of general construction and maintenance of natural and hybrid playing surfaces.
  • Knowledge of different turfgrass species, growth habits, environmental/climate requirements, maintenance requirements.
  • Knowledge of grass development, breeding, and evaluation strategies for use as sports turf grass.
  • Familiarity with modern turfgrass growing technologies and aids including growing lights, underground heating and drainage systems, and other techniques applied by high-capacity stadiums to aid in turfgrass growth.
